Board of Directors
Simon Barnes, Ph.D., Director
Dr. Barnes is Managing Partner of Tate & Lyle Ventures. He has a background in life sciences venture capital, first with the London office of Atlas Venture and subsequently with GIMV Venture Capital. He has focused throughout his career on investing in university spin outs in Europe including Renovo, CropDesign, Aquapharm BioDiscovery and Lumora. Simon was trained as a plant biochemist and has a first class honors degree in Natural Sciences and a PhD from The University of Cambridge. He spent two years as a NATO Research Fellow at The Rockefeller University in New York. He holds an MBA with Distinction from the Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London.
Stephen A. Block, J.D., Director
Mr. Block is a member of the Tech Coast Angels and serves on the Executive Committee of the Orange County Network. In addition, he is a partner in Venture Farm, LLC, which provides early stage venture capital to entrepreneurs. Mr. Block currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Senomyx, Chromadex, Allylix, and XS Capacity. From 1991 until his retirement in 2003, Mr. Block was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of International Flavors & Fragrances Inc. He has 38 years of broad legal, management and executive experience at Fortune 500 corporations and a major New York law firm. Mr. Block has his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and his BA cum laude from Yale University.
Carolyn Fritz, CEO, Director
Ms. Fritz has been the CEO of Allylix since October 2004. She has extensive experience in building biotechnology businesses. From 1999 - 2004, Ms. Fritz built two start-up businesses for Dow Chemical- the first developed new chemicals and polymers using microbial fermentation and plant oils and the second contract manufactured biopharmaceuticals using E-coli and transgenic plants. From 1993 to 1999, she built a biotechnology business for Cargill that focused upon developing new food and industrial products from plant oils. She grew this business from a start-up to a profitable $130 MM business. Ms. Fritz has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an MS from George Washington University, and a BSME from Iowa State University.
Tom Jameson, Director
Mr. Jameson is successful serial entrepreneur. He is currently president and sole owner of Shelf Plus and is Chairman and owner of BestCare, Inc. Since 1977, ShelfPlus has provided professional assistance in planning and implementing cost-effective inventory management and automated storage and retrieval systems. BestCare serves the fast growing field of the travel nurse staffing. Mr. Jameson is a managing member of Bluegrass Venture Fund LLC, specializing in angel investing. He has invested privately in numerous start-up companies, most notably CompuCRIB, Tempurpedic, Vortecone, Rhinocyte, Allylix, Neurop, and Stallion.
Thomas Jurgensen, J.D., Director, Founder
Mr. Jurgensen is the Managing Shareholder of Catalyst Law Group, APC, a technology-focused Law Firm headquartered in San Diego, California. In addition to Allylix and Catalyst Law Group, Mr. Jurgensen is also a Founder of Inverseon, Inc. and Urigen, Inc. and is a strategic advisor and Board Member to numerous technology-based companies. Mr. Jurgensen previously served as General Counsel of The Salk Institute and of Molecular Biosystems, Inc., and as Associate General Counsel for Ligand Pharmaceuticals. Before moving to San Diego, Mr. Jurgensen was Intellectual Property Counsel to 3M Corporation and an Associate in the Minneapolis law office of Merchant and Gould.
David Kabakoff, Ph. D., Director
Dr. Kabakoff has extensive experience in raising venture funding and building successful biotechnology companies. Until recently, Dr. Kabakoff served as Chairman and CEO of Salmedix, Inc., an oncology drug development firm. In less than four years Salmedix raised $ 82 Million in venture capital and advanced three drugs to Phase II trials, initiated Phase III trials for its lead drug, Treanda™ before being acquired by Cephalon, Inc. for ~$200 Million. Prior to Salmedix, Dr. Kabakoff was President, Dura Technologies and Chairman and CEO of Corvas International which he led for seven years, from post-Series A financing until four years post-IPO.
Bob Molinari, Ph.D., Board Observer
Dr. Molinari has been a managing director of Medstars Biotech since 1999. Medstars Biotech advises and invests in early stage biotech entrepreneurs. Dr. Molinari often becomes an acting business executive in the startup of a company and a mentor of scientific founders. He has been an early advisor of Singulex, Inc., Affymetrix, Nanogen, Sequenom, and Intrinsic Bioprobes. Dr. Molinari was co-founder, president and CEO of CODA Genomics, a synthetic biology company, and Protogene Laboratories, the first commercialized parallel DNA synthesis company, and Chairman, CEO and President of AT Biochem, a DNA sequencing and electrophoresis technology company. Dr. Molinari has a Ph.D. in Biophysical Chemistry from Brown University and an MBA from Amos Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College. |
