The primary duties of this position will be to evaluate strains and processes for the production of metabolites by analysis of carbon flow and assay of critical enzymes and metabolites. The scientist will design and implement assay methodologies for the relevant enzymes and metabolites, determine bottlenecks in carbon flux, and participate in developing strategies, strains and processes to overcome those bottlenecks. Extensive knowledge of biochemical pathways and enzymology, as well as a broad, genomic and proteomic view and approach to yeast biology is essential. Familiarity with protein expression systems is also desired. The candidate will be self-motivated, able to think and work independently, while contributing to a team effort to achieve business and technical objectives.
A PhD in metabolic engineering, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, systems biology, or related discipline is required. Strong analytic chemistry and biochemistry skills utilizing various spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques are highly desirable. This job requires excellent organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Research Assistant - Fermentation
Primary duties will include preparation and inoculation of fermenters, daily monitoring and adjustment of fermentations, and sample collection and analysis. As such the individual will be directly involved in equipment preparation, preventive maintenance, and tracking of parts and consumables associated with the operations. Preparation of sterile media and reagents as well as aseptic handling of microbial cultures is a critical part of the position. Preparation of samples for analysis by HPLC, GC, and other analytical methods will be required along with analysis of the results.
Education requirements are a BS degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology or related discipline. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years of experience running microbial fermentations. This position requires organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask. The position also requires part time duty on alternating weekends.
