Products
Initially, the Company will focus upon a class of terpenes called sesquiterpenes. Sesquiterpenes are part of the $1.9 billion aroma chemical segment of the flavor and fragrance market. Current prices for sesquiterpenes are high due to the limited supply of quality starting materials and the high cost of extraction and purification. These high prices have limited the use of sesquiterpenes to just a few high end applications. Allylix has identified a number of sesquiterpene flavors and fragrances whose markets would expand substantially if there were a low cost alternative.
Nootkatone
Allylix's first product is the grapefruit flavor nootkatone which is currently used in fruit juices and citrus flavored sodas. Nootkatone is currently produced through extraction from grapefruit peels. Its market is limited due to its high price. Allylix plans to create and exploit a substantially expanded market for nootkatone using a proprietary low cost production process that would reduce the price of nootkatone to a just fraction of current prices. At this low price, Allylix will not only be able to market nootkatone to much broader food uses but also to fragrance applications.
Fragrances
In addition to nootkatone, Allylix plans to develop three sesquiterpenes fragrances that are highly valued by perfumers but have limited use due to their high prices. The Company plans to produce these three important fragrances at a cost that will allow them to be used in household and personal care products.
Insect Repellent
There is also significant potential for sesquiterpenes in the insect repellent market. In 2003, the Urban Pesticide Market was a $3.6 Billion global market and has been growing rapidly driven by increasing concern about insect borne diseases. While DEET has been the dominant mosquito repellent in North America for over a decade, there is growing concern about DEET's safety since it is a known neurotoxin. Allylix has identified two products that in testing had lengths of protection similar to DEET and show significant promise as effective insect repellents.
Pharmaceutical Market
In the long term, the Company will explore the potential to capture value from its technology in the pharmaceutical market through selling novel pharmaceuticals intermediates or developing new drugs. |
