Technology
Allylix's technology has two key components. The first is the ability to engineer enzymes to produce a range of highly pure terpenes and the second is the ability to produce those terpenes cost effectively using proprietary fermentation processes. The Company's ability to engineer these enzymes is built upon a thorough understanding of the molecular structure of a class of enzymes, called synthases that are used by plants to produce terpenes.

In the 1990s, Allylix's Scientific Founders cloned the first plant terpene synthase and elucidated the first structure of a plant terpene synthase, /Nicotiana tabacum/ 5-epi-aristolochene synthase (TEAS). By evaluating TEAS and a second synthase enzyme /Hyoscyamus muticus/ premnaspirodiene synthase (HPS), they were then able to develop empirical rules that govern synthase enzymatic mechanisms. Next, by viewing the TEAS structure in light of the known sequence divergence between TEAS and HPS, they developed a structural mapping model that identified not only the amino acids in the active site but also the amino acids adjacent to the active site that directly influence type of terpene produced. By varying amino acids through molecular engineering, Allylix has the ability to change the synthase so that it produces different terpenes at extremely high purity levels.

The Company's cost effective fermentation process is based upon proprietary yeast strains that have been engineered to produce terpenes at extraordinarily high levels. Allylix's scientists insert the engineered synthase into one of its yeast strains and then using a fermentation process similar to brewing beer, cost effectively produces commercial volumes of the terpene of interest.
